If you have a Google Home, you can say “Okay Google” or “Hey Google” to start using it. However, if you are using Assistant on your phone, only “Okay Google” works. This will soon change.
This is slowly being rolled out to phones. I am not sure what the criteria is. According to this report from Android Police, this works on Galaxy S7 Edge. I thought Google gave preference to Pixel phones while rolling out new features?
If you regularly use Assistant on both your phone and Google Home, this feature should reduce some confusion for you. I am yet to get a Google Home, but I can imagine folks with both trying out Hey Google on their phones and getting disappointed.
This feature was leaked earlier in an APK tear down by XDA. So this was not completely unexpected. They looked up the code and found mentions of Hey Google hotword for phones too.
So, if you have an Assistant-ready phone, give it a try now. Try saying Hey Google and see if that wakes up your phone. If it works, drop me a comment with your phone model so that it will help others too!
Oh by the way, do you like using Assistant on your phone, or on Google Home? Let me know!
